With MP40 upgrade, volks make somewhat ineffective defensive troops unless in conjunction with a unit which offers suppression. These troops can be used best to charge forth as close to the enemy as possible and remaining in cover, while more powerful long range troops attack from another direction. Usually not worth purchasing, unless you are desperate. Other abilities include Panzerfaust, a single fire rocket that does moderate damage to light vehicles and always hits for 35 munitions. Be forewarned, they remain relatively fragile even with veterancy. This upgrade will transform volks squads from decent riflemen to unmatched close assault infantry until enemy Rangers and Commandos hit the field. Upon reaching Skirmish Phase, you will get access to a 50 munition upgrade giving the entire squad MP40 submachine guns. They will defeat a standard riflemen squad at medium to long range and useful for an early push. Initially they are armed with a simple Karbiner 1898 bolt action rifle and operating in 5 man squads. In Company of Heroes, these units will act as your basic infantry, useful for throughout the game. Deployed heaviest during the Battle of the Bulge as fully separate divisions complete with armour, halftracks, artillery and air support, they proved formidable adversaries for the western allies but made only limited impact on the war. Receiving usually short and very basic training, they were equipped much like other army elements, with less and less quality hardware available as the war reached its closing point. Historically, the Volksgrendiers, literally People's Infantry, were a section of the Whermacht consisting of conscripts, usually those unsuitable for standard service.
